Housing, care and support

Accommodation at Pocklington Place is provided in 64 purpose-built one and two bedroom apartments, each specifically designed for people with sight loss. A total of 45 apartments are available for rent, and are let under an assured tenancy which gives tenants a full security of tenure. The remaining 19 apartments are available for sale, on an outright or shared-ownership basis, through Midland Heart Housing Association.

Each apartment, and all communal facilities, have lighting, colour contrasting decorations, signs and fittings designed to help people with sight loss, while bathrooms are fitted with appropriate hand rails and bathing aids. For safety and security, all apartments are linked to an emergency call system enabling tenants to call for assistance at any time. Our professionally trained care and support staff are available 24 hours a day. A handyman service is also available on site.

A restaurant, large communal lounge, hairdresser, shop, activities room, launderette and IT suite are available for the use of tenants, lease holders and their guests. The restaurant provides high-quality meals in an attractive environment, and meals can also be provided direct to your apartment. A secure rear garden provides an attractive outdoor area for the summer months, and a separate dog-pen is provided for the use of guide dogs.

All staff at Pocklington Place receive visual awareness training and are professionally trained to understand the needs of older people with sight loss. The centre manager is qualified to NVQ level 4 in care, supervisors are qualified to NVQ Level 3, and all care and support staff are trained to (or are working towards) NVQ Level 2.

All services offered at Pocklington Place are provided to a high standard, based on national standards of best practice. Our key aim is to enable people with sight loss to live full, active and independent lives, and we involve tenants in the quality and development of our services. An active tenants association meets regularly with the centre managers, and contributes to the work of the wider organisation.

Pocklington Place is registered with Birmingham County Council, and is regularly inspected by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI). To view or order a copy of our latest inspection report (March 2007), please visit the CSCI website.
