This area of our research and development work focuses on public health issues, including prevention of blindness and promotion of eye health.

Our recent and current projects under this research theme include:

Dietary fat and macular disease (2007)

An add-on study to a European study by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine assessed links between eating dietary fats and risks of age related macular disease.

Obstacles to the detection of remediable eye disease in older people (2008)

University College London will research older people’s take-up of vision testing and patient and professional barriers to improving visual function.

The impact of visual impairment on functional disability and hospital admissions (2008)

This impact project is being led by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Improving the detection of correctable sight loss in older people (2008)

This project by the Institute of Optometry will assess the value of portable tests for detecting correctable vision problems.

An exploratory study of blue light (2008)

This preliminary study by Moorfields Hospital is reviewing evidence and research on possible harmful effects.
