Home Support Service Volunteer

About this volunteer role

Volunteer Role: Home Support.

To visit and provide valuable support to an individual with sight loss in their own home and local community.

Location: Mary Stevens Resource Centre, but you will be visiting individuals anywhere within the Dudley Borough and North Worcestershire.

Accountable to: Volunteer Co-ordinator

Accountable for: None

Key Tasks. To reduce isolation by:

  • Spending time talking and listening.
  • Accompany out on a walk in the local area and on occasional outings.

To provide support by:

  • Reading and assisting in replying to correspondence or reading other documents.
  • Accompany an individual on non-essential shopping trips and/or going out for coffee.
  • Accompany out on non-essential appointments (e.g. hairdresser).

Other tasks:

  • Attend regular supervision with the Volunteer Co-ordinator.
  • To complete basic monthly report and expenses forms and return to the Volunteer Co-ordinator.

Full induction will be provided covering the following areas:

  • Visual Awareness
  • Confidentiality
  • Lone working and Personal Safety
  • Protecting Vulnerable Adults
  • Boundaries
  • Equality and Diversity

Key Skills/Experience/Attributes Required:

  • Be punctual and reliable in attending your arranged meetings with the person you are supporting.
  • Be self-motivated and confident in working alone.
  • Be honest and trustworthy.
  • To have good listening and conversational skills.
  • Ability/willingness to understand the issues faced by individuals living with sight loss.
  • To be non-judgemental and have the ability to treat people with respect.
  • Have an interest in supporting people in the community and be able to travel to the home of the person with whom you are matched.
  • Be able to complete the monthly forms as required.
  • Have a good sense of humour.

Special Requirements:

  • References and a Criminal Records Bureau check will be required for all volunteer roles.
  • A willingness to work in an environment with guide dogs.
