To get everyone in the Volunteers Week spirit, we held a virtual meet and greet last week!  Around 30 people joined us in the event including Sight Loss Council members, event and Link Up volunteers.

Rachel Wilkinson and Kirsty Palmer from Thomas Pocklington Trust’s volunteering team introduced the event and thanked volunteers for their ‘passion, commitment and contribution.’

Rachel said: “From all of us at Thomas Pocklington Trust and the Sight Loss Councils, we would like to say a huge thank you to all of our amazing volunteers, who give up their time, energy, enthusiasm and expertise to help us support blind and partially sighted people to live the lives they want to lead.”

Volunteers introduced themselves, spoke about their roles and why they think volunteering is so important - and rewarding.

Merseyside Sight Loss Council member Matt spoke about their recent Bridge the Gap employment event, designed to raise awareness of the challenges faced by visually impaired job seekers with employers. He also spoke about the Accessibility workshops they ran in partnership with the Liverpool Apple store.

Volunteer Hubert, spoke about TPT’s London-based Link Up service. Hubert enjoys being a sighted guide for Link Up members who have gone to places as varied as networking meetings, the cinema, museums, sports events and a Christmas market. Link Up is only operating in the capital at this time but TPT is reviewing whether this could be rolled out nationally.  Watch this space!

Sight Loss Council member Liz, explained that she is passionate about being a Sight Loss Council member because “As visually impaired people, we are the ones that can explain what makes our lives better.”

Following a question from volunteer, Kelsey, on how many blind and partially sighted staff are employed by Thomas Pocklington Trust, volunteers were surprised to learn that more than 40% of TPT’s staff are visually impaired!
